Johnny Nelson goes West is a fantastical look at the afterlife with all its quirks and flaws. Characters collide on this belting ride through the cosmos as Johnny comes to grips with his possible demise, a romantic interest named Lily Jayne Mandi and the flamboyant fighter, bomber pilot and self-styled guide to all things hereafter, Charlie Parker Bennett.
From the outset, Johnny is obliterated in one of the most spectacular land speed record attempts ever, and after a short respite in the "waiting room," he decides that he will accompany Charlie on a mission of the utmost importance. The delivery of toilet paper to the stranded crew on Plutomona. Lily Jayne decides to tag along, and they pick up more and more stragglers as the adventure progresses. Charlie uncorks the Dragon Fire to win a darts competition, annihilates a runway, blows up a ship and manages to get chased halfway across the cosmos. Johnny destroys a land speed record car along with himself, then does almost the same thing a short while later while borrowing a friend's "Tucker" and leaving most of it strewn across a mile or so of runway. Rupert (the highly intellectual robot) comes to their rescue, rebuilding the car better than before, and saving them from an explosive Angus Mc Dougall. From futuristic Pirate ships and very camp Captains to interstellar travel in World War two Aircraft, Johnny Nelson goes West never ceases to provide humor, adventure, pathos and even the occasional tear. As trilogy's go, this one's well worth a read.
